Why We Are Unhappy with Many Other MSPs — and You Should Be Too

↻ Originally published October 2020. Updated August 2026 — the industry's bad habits survived; our refusal to accept them did too.

At The Tech Company we have seen time and time again the same problems from other managed service providers. Businesses come to us frustrated, locked in, and paying for a service they can't quite describe. This article is the one we wrote in 2020 out of that frustration — and every word of it still applies.

The patterns we refuse to accept

  • Reactive-only support. If your provider only appears when something breaks, you're paying for a fire brigade, not a partner. Monitoring should catch issues before your staff do.
  • The invisible account manager. You should know exactly who owns your account — and they should know your environment without opening a wiki.
  • Mystery invoicing. Line items nobody can explain, licences for tools nobody uses, and "maintenance" that never leaves a paper trail.
  • Lock-in by obscurity. Passwords held hostage, undocumented networks, and configurations nobody else can decipher. Your environment belongs to you.
  • One-size-fits-nobody SLAs. A retail group and a law firm do not have the same uptime profile. Cookie-cutter SLAs serve the provider, not the client.

What we do differently

We built TechServ as the answer: dedicated account management per client, proactive AI-assisted monitoring that predicts failures before they land, transparent reporting, documented environments you own, and SLAs written around your actual business. It's why our client retention sits at 95% — clients stay because leaving never crosses their mind, not because leaving is hard.

Hold your provider to this standard

Ask your current MSP three questions: What did you fix last month that I never heard about? Where is my network documentation? What does this line item buy me? If the answers take longer than a day, you have your answer.
